Keto Tips

Ginger Splash

Hi guys!

I just posted this response to a post from another user and thought maybe some other people may find it useful :)

For me, keto is not a diet. It is my new way of life. I will never go back to eating the way that I did before, so I am not concerned about stopping and putting the weight back on etc like some people mention.

Also my husband is type 2 diabetic, and as of this week he is completely off all medication! This diet has single handedly cured his diabetes. We continue to monitor it daily and with blood tests, but so far, so good!

My whole attitude towards food has completely changed!

I don't recommend keto unless you are willing to commit at least 3 months to giving it a try. You truly don't adapt and settle into the diet until around the 3 month mark.

It's hard at first, you get the keto flu, you feel lethargic, you have cravings. This is all normal and there are a few things that you can do to help with this.

1. Make sure you are drinking enough, I need to drink at least 3 litres of water a day or I feel hungover.

2. Make sure you are getting enough sodium, either find a keto friendly electrolyte supplement, or I sometimes sprinkle some pink salt into my water. This will help loads!

3. Don't calorie count at first, instead look at your plate of food and say to yourself "is my plate 70 % fat, 25% protein and 5% carbs".

If not, make sure you get your healthy fats in with things like macadamia nuts and avocado.

4. Keep it simple, my husband and I eat the same 3 things for lunch every day of the week. Striploin steak and fried halloumi, cauliflower rice and salmon sushi or sausages and halloumi.

Take the thinking out of the process helps so much.

5. Make keto friendly snacks, I make mini frittata cups in silicone muffin molds. This makes portion control easy and they are delicious. Also fat boms are amazing. Good way to up your fat content and also have an after dinner treat. I freeze mine and they are like cheesecake bites.

So here's a few actual food ideas.

We only eat Broccoli, Asparagus, Avocado and Spinach regularly. We will have cauliflower rice in homemade sushi, but this is limited.

We don't eat chicken, if we do, it's chicken wings.

You need to remember that 100 Grams of steak and 100 Grams of chicken will have very different fat and protein ratios. You want to get the most bang for your buck.

We don't eat breakfast, we have a coffee with heavy cream and then eat our first meal between 1pm and 2pm. To be honest, this has happened naturally. As you become fat adapted, you are less hungry.

I have lost 5kgs in about 7 weeks. I haven't had a crazy fast loss, but this is the first diet where I have had continued loss, and it has transitioned into a lifestyle.

For dinner we do things like, slow cooker chilli without the beans, it's tasty, and by adding avocado you having a good balance.

Or we have pork steaks wrapped in prosciutto.

Another regular is duck breast with Broccolini that has soy sauce on it.

You can get some low carb options!

We also love doing bunless burgers with cheese and homemade Big Mac Sauce.

We serve a side of vegetables at dinner time, this is our only serving of vegetables during the day, we have found this world for us, we like to have a cleaner evening meal and not worry about the added carbs that veges give.

Don't stress too much about the protein, we always go slightly over the recommended amount. But at the end of the day, our goal is a lifestyle change, and so it has to be sustainable to us and our tastes. And I love a big ass steak haha

We cook all our food in grass fed butter or olive oil. This is another way to get in good fats. You can use coconut oil, I just don't like the taste :)

Anyway feel free to ask me any questions, I am not an expert, just loving this journey 😊
