Can having your cervix checked cause PROM(Premature Rupture of Membranes)?

I’m curious, because with my first pregnancy, I had a routine appointment at 37 weeks, and I got my cervix checked for the first time. It was pretty painful, and literally the next morning I woke up and my shorts and undies were wet. It wasn’t a lot but enough to soak through my shorts. I knew right away that I was leaking amniotic fluid. I called the hospital, and they told me to come in the next day if it still felt like it was leaking. It was still leaking the next day, so I went to L&D and they hooked me up to the monitors. The nurse said to me, “Why are you here? You’re not having any contractions.” I explained that I thought my water had broke, so she swabbed me and tested it. Sure enough I was leaking amniotic fluid. They induced me, and 24 hours later my baby girl was born at 37+6 weighing 6lbs even and measuring 18 inches even. She was so beautiful and perfectly healthy! Thank the Lord! 🙏

Do you think it’s just a big coincidence that my cervix was checked the day before my water broke? Or, could it have caused it to break too soon? I never had any complications with my pregnancy what so ever. It was actually a very enjoyable experience! My daughter is now 5 1/2, and I often wonder about this. It really bothers me that I’ll never know what would’ve happened had I not had my cervix checked at my 37 week appointment. Would I have carried her longer and closer to her due date? Maybe so, but also maybe not. However, I’ve always truly felt having my cervix checked caused PROM, and my body wasn’t ready for labor just yet. What do you ladies think? Has this happened to anyone else before?

I’m scared to get my cervix checked this time around. I’m 27+3. If my OB asks me, I think I’ll refuse to be checked. It may sound crazy, but what’s the point anyway? Unless they’re going to do a membrane sweep, I really don’t think it’s necessary and could even have risks and negative side effects, but what do I know? 🤷‍♀️
