Girl told to ‘cover up’ on airline or be removed

Currently in the U.K. news there is a debate raging about a 21-year-old who was asked to cover up on a flight or risk being removed.

In brief, 21-year-old Emily O’Connor went through the airport, security, the boarding gate without issue until she was sat on the plane, where she was told her outfit was ‘inappropriate’ and she was told by airline staff to cover up.

She states she was left ‘shaken and upset’ having been surrounded by five staff on the plane. She did cover up in the end by borrowing a jacket from her cousin. Emily has complained that she was being singled out and it was sexiest, as there was a male on board who was wearing a vest and shorts, but no one told him to cover up (it’s not clear how much skin this man was showing in his vest and shorts).

The airline have since apologised about how they handled the situation but have stood by their dress code policy.

Is this sexist? Were the airline right to ask her to cover up? Do you think there is anything wrong with what she is wearing to catch a flight? Where they wrong to tell her cover up and not the man in shorts?

Women should and can wear whatever they want, but should there also be some situational awareness about when and where to wear certain items of clothing? E.g crop top and booty shorts perhaps not appropriate for a funeral for example (in my opinion)

Are people just getting their knickers in a twist over nothing and should leave her alone?
