Does a person's name influence the person they become?

I have seen a lot of people comment on the baby name group when people ask for opinions on unique names. They say the name will hold the person back in the future as a professional as their name would not be seriously. Do you think a name can influence who a person becomes?

I don’t think a person’s name influences who they become. I do think other people will judge them for their name though.  It’s foolish to think that there aren’t HR departments that pass over someone’s resume because they have a ‘weird’ name.

I was just talking about this the other day! My friends name is Viggo. I immediately think of an ugly man when I hear that name. My sons name is Banks and I’ve heard many people say they make assumptions about him based on his name. I think it does influence your personality and who you become bcs people assume things based on a name.

I mean depends on what you're naming them.... But any persons name can make anyone feel a certain way.. regardless of if it's an out there name or a common name.

When I was a teenager, I applied for a job at a retail store (back when you had to go in person and physically fill out an application). When I went in for the interview, the girl at the register asked if I had gotten the job; I said yes. She said, “oh ok, great! Hey I kinda helped you get hired.” I said, “really- how so?” 
“Well the manager was going through applications and saw your name and said ‘ugh, a black girl, nope’, and tossed your application right into the garbage. I told him wait, no, look at her last name. She’s Spanish. Then he had me call you.”
HAND TO GOD. I’ve always carried this with me. People need to be aware of what they name their children. Doing the most in the name of “uniqueness” is not acceptable when these kids have to venture out into the real world. The fact is, whether it’s right or not, that people can and do associate certain names with negative images and thoughts. Name a kid “Shayquaywakanda” or “Raging River” and they WILL be judged. Period.  
P.S. no, I don’t hate my name.

It’s been proven that college admissions and employers see weird names and don’t take them as seriously. It shouldn’t be that way but it is. Some of these names are cruel. Not only will employers not take them seriously but they will also be teased and clients won’t take them seriously.

Probably not what this was aimed at, but just my experience...When I was born, my mother wanted to name me an American name, so I am Kimberly. My dad had his way with my brother. His name is Miguel. We have a very Hispanic family surname. We grew up in an area where at the time there were very few Hispanics and my brother’s name was constantly mispronounced. I think it affected him as a child. He even went through a phase where he was asking to be called Michael. Sad really. Flash forward to adulthood, he is a pharmacist working in a hospital and when people see his name they think he can speak Spanish, which he cannot 😂 I have a very American sounding married last name and I have noticed that I get called more for photography clients now that I’ve changed my name.

It can definitely influence things like your chances of getting hired or cause people to make assumptions of you that you may later end up subconsciously taking on. Not always though, but it definitely can happen and does happen to some people.
