If you don't have proper care, your tattoo can become fuzzy and faded. The lines won't be as crisp, and ink won't stay within your skin. Tattoo artists know right away whether you took care of your tattoo or not, and so do many tattoo enthusiasts.

Not all outcomes of tattoos are due to how you care for them. I've done exactly what was recommended to me by my artists and turns out I'm allergic to certain inks and some of the crap they try to sell you for after care. I've learned what works for me and someday I'll get my allergy tattoos covered or redone... although I worry about irritating them again... so some of it is trial and error. Do you put lotion on a big scrape? No you do not... basically you figure out what works for you with the guidance of your artist.

Aquaphor on the first day and unscented lotion sparingly around the area if it feels too tight. 
I’ve had 18+ sessions over the last year, a few of them on my hands. Once I started dry healing I’ve never gone back. The tattoo won’t look cute while it’s healing, but it won’t hurt the tattoo either. 
Never put too much lotion on the tattoo, just like you wouldn’t put lotion on an open wound. 
My boyfriend is a tattoo artist and I learned to heal mine the way he lets his tattoos heal. Obviously everybody’s skin is different and will heal differently, but the main thing is to be consistent with the method you’ve chosen. Just make sure you don’t overcare for your tattoo. 
Keep it out of the sun. Don’t wear tight clothing over the area. Let it air out as much as possible. Don’t submerge it. DO NOT APPLY WITCH HAZEL OR ALCOHOL OR ANYTHING OR THAT SORT TO “CLEAN” IT. 
Remember also that your tattoo won’t be healed after a few weeks. Even after you think its done healing it might not be finished. If you’re unsure whether your healing process is done you can go back to your artist and ask.

My best advice is don't waste money on something that you aren't going to take care of and end up looking like crap because of it. always take care of permanent things on your body

Everyone's bodies will react different to tattoos but it is equally important to use good products for ur skin type and good for healing. Leaving it alone could lead to horrible affects
