Peanuts or nuts at elementary school

La

So the other day I was listening to a local talk show radio station and the subject of parents sending their elementary school children with peanuts or nuts to school came up.

As most people know when children have peanut or nut allergies it can be deadly. At the school I worked at we had a separate table in the lunch room for children with peanut and nut allergies and if for some reason the parents didn’t want their child sitting at that table they had to sign a waiver. The waiver pretty much says they are allowing their child to sit next to other children who may have peanut products or nut products in their lunch and the school can not be liable for this.

Children aren’t always the neatest eater so of course there can be a possibility of somehow the nut product getting near another child’s lunch.

So back to the radio station they were having a debate of if it’s ok to send a their child to school with peanut or nut product like a peanut butter sandwich (which is a staple of Many children’s lunches). One person on the talk show was saying “just because someone is allergic my child can’t enjoy a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch?”

The other person debating was saying “it’s common knowledge to not send it to school with so many kids around because this allergy can be deadly for so many children”

I personally remember bringing peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to lunch at school as a child. But was curious if this is common knowledge to parents to refrain from sending their children to school with peanut products?

EDIT- so I want to ad something to my post I never said that a parent is wrong for sending their child with a peanut product to school. I personally would not have realized that this is even something to think about myself. I wouldn’t even think that most people even think about this. My main reason for asking this question is to find out if this is common knowledge or not. For me it personally wasn’t something I realized was a issue until recently.
