Is this too graphic for preschool?

Alright y'all. I'll try to keep this short. I am a Preschool teacher at a Christian Academy. Personally, I'm not a Christian (they don't know that). But I'm okay with teaching the Christian curriculum and I act and speak like a Christian while I am there. I push the faith on them just like I would if I WAS of their religion because it's my job. Anyways, this week we are studying the death and rising of Jesus. While I was reading the script today for the Bible story, there was a picture similar to the one below but with more lashes on Jesus. Then, the lines said: "Jesus was beaten and nailed to a wooden cross. He died because of all of the things we do wrong, so we can be saved." I was really taken back. These are 3, 4, and 5 year old kids. I felt like that was WAY too intense and inappropriate. Granted, I'm not a Christian. So, I asked my husband who is. He said it's normal and not inappropriate because it's non-fiction and "it is what it is". I don't know why, but I felt SO uncomfortable reading that. I ended up saying a much cleaner version of that because I just couldn't. It's been bothering me because I have to read the story every day this week. Am I being over dramatic? Is it too graphic?
