Is it “normal” for a husband to sleep in a separate room after baby arrives?

He works outside of the home; Mom stays home with baby.

My friends just had their second baby and the dad just slept with their first born for a while so he could get more sleep. I think it’s fair for the dad to be allowed to get sleep since he has to go to work

not fair because only the mom gets woken up? when she probably gets up at the same time as the husband, if not earlier, and then she works all day taking care of the house and the baby, while he's at work, lol? 
just sounds very not selfish, but unloving.

If our daughter doesn’t sleep well at night she and I will be sleeping in the nursery. There is absolutely no reason for him to be up all night and then work driving trucks and heavy machinery or fixing track all day exhausted. If I’m up all night and exhausted I can just hang out and nap in between feeds and changes even with housework. When I start working again it will be part time and I’m a therapist so my job isn’t dangerous like his is. I don’t have a dangerous commute like he does. He needs his sleep way more than I do. He helps after work until bedtime and does a lot with our son doing fun stuff. He also helps with housework and dinner. He deserves the extra sleep especially since he doesn’t make milk.

My husband and I slept apart for a few weeks. I stayed home and he worked. When he went back to work he started sleeping in another room. He needed to get sleep. It also didn’t make sense to me that he would stay awake when I had to be because I was breastfeeding and not working.

I would be fine with it. He does a lot of heavy labour, driving machinery etc during the day. I would prefer him not going to work totally fatigued. I can catch up on sleep during the day whereas he can’t.

My husband had to go back to work  1 week after our son was born.  I'd just take the baby out of our room if he was crying.  We moved the baby to his own room shortly after but I would still bring him in our bedroom a lot to nurse.    But my husband always slept with me.  Some nights even though he couldn't feel our son he would go get him and change his diaper and bring him to me.  It was sweet

I think “normal” defines what works for each couple. My husband worked and I was a stay at home mom when my first was born. We slept together like always, he never went into another room but we were lucky with a baby who had a quiet cry lol if it was a louder cry, I wouldn’t blame him on work nights. I didn’t worry about him having to get up in the night with me because he had work. It didn’t bother me. Some couples find it ok that the working partner still wakes up, and that is an ok scenario if it works for them. It really just depends.

I would also want my SO to stay away so we want end right back up pregnant also so that way we can get sleep and I can get up to tend to the baby when I need to

I think it really depends on the family and the work life. My boyfriend wouldn't hear of it, but he wants to be as involved as he can. He also works 4pm-12am most days and 10am-10pm others as a caregiver for people with dementia, brain injuries, autism and other mental disabilities. He also is pretty used to functioning on little sleep as a volunteer firefighter and first responder. If the father works a demanding job, especially one where lack of sleep can seriously impact how he performs, then I totally understand. Normal is just a setting on a wash machine 🤷 Just gotta do what is best for your family/situation.
