How did you know you were ready for sex?

My boyfriend and I are both 16 and have been together for 7 months now. We are both virgins. We feel very strongly about one another. I care about him a lot. I know I’m not ready for sex yet because I’m pretty afraid of taking that step and just doing that altogether. How did you know when you were ready? Was it just a feeling or did you make sure to date the guy for a certain amount of time or something else? Also, what did you use for protection? My mom told me to let her know if I want to be sexually actively so she can take me to get on some birth control. I am guessing I’ll just get on the pill unless you have other suggestions.
