Do you have to get a catheter during labor?

I know if you have a c-section or epidural you get a catheter bc you can’t feel you need to pee or you can’t get up...but is it mandatory? Will they make you get one?? Or can you just get a bed pan or something...

Yea if you are having a c section you will get a catheter. They are not that bad. A bed pan wouldn’t be very sterile. I don’t think they would let you have one in surgery.

With my first I had the type that stays in until delivery. With my second they just did it periodically to relieve my bladder. Neither was really a bother because once you get the epidural you’re numb anyways.

The point of an epidural is more for the fact that if you have a full bladder it will slow labor. 
You won’t even know they put it in actually. They tend to do it when they are doing a cervical check and it takes seconds to do.

In theory you be able to feel that you have to go if you have an epidural or a csection so you won’t know that you need to use the bed pan and you’ll just go. So the bedpan would be useless
