Why do people name a baby before they meet them?

I just think it's not as personal if you name a baby before you see what they look like. I think if you are naming a baby after someone in your family then it is a different story. But I personally would have names picked out for us to choose from when we meet the little thing 😊❤ 
Just curious the reasoning for other people?
*edit I was named baby "my lastname" for like a week cause they couldn't decide so I was just wondering lol

What difference does what they look like make? That seems odd to me. Lol..names aren't based on how a person looks and how an infant looks is nothing like how they will look in even a year or two.. or ten. Lol.

Because you start thinking of names and find one you really connect to and envision your child with that name. Newborns often look funny anyway. I liked having their names picked out. I’m indecisive as hell and my kids probably would be named Thing 1 and Thing 2 if I didn’t have it already figured out when they were born.

Babies look like potatoes when they’re born... I’d rather have a name picked out than think “hmm what should I call this tiny alien?”

We incorporated family names into ours, so yes, we had picked out names for our sons beforehand.
