Water birth: safe or no?

I don’t think any birthing method is completely safe. They all come with varying risks.

I think those kind of questions should be between you and your midwife/ob or doctor. However I personally didn’t want it 🤷🏻‍♀️

When done properly with the guidance of a midwife or OB, it’s safe.
Nothing about birth is “completely safe”, but it’s not considered a dangerous practice, and it has benefits, which is why more and more hospitals are incorporating labor/birth tubs or pools in their L&D wards 😊 (I’m actually planning a hospital water birth myself and love that I have that option even being higher risk!)

As with everything, PLEASE consult with your OB/midwife when making decisions like this, as they know you and your pregnancy’s health history and can give you personalized info on whether you’re a good candidate!

My decision, after much research, was to limit it to labor only and not have a water birth.  While having a water birth does have some comfort advantages, it adds some small but very serious additional risks. For me, the benefits did not outweigh those risks.

There has been an increase in babies getting pneumonia from inhaling water in water births.  I don’t know how common it was before this newer information came out so I still don’t know how common pneumonia in that situation actually is.  I personally wouldn’t do it.
