What are the benefits and disadvantages to getting your son circumcised?

My fiancé and I are talking about if we should circumcise our son when he’s born, and we both have mixed feelings about it. What are some pros and cons that you considered when making the decision? (We’re not religious)

I’m due this August with a boy. We will have it done. My partner is circumcised and is glad he is. I’ve talked with people who work in nursing homes and have personally seen the men that aren’t get a ton of infections and it’s harder to clean them. I’ve done my research. I’ll also be asking questions at my next midwife appt and pediatrician appt as well- so I’m not taking the decision lightly. I just want what’s best for my kiddo just like everyone else.

Do your own independent research and ask physicians input. However, if you do decide to circumcise, please don't listen to those who tell you to retract the foreskin to clean it, you actually are not supposed to do that. Your son would be the only person who would do that when he is older. I have one son with and one without a circumcised penis and neither have had any infections or any issues. My ex-husband wanted it done on my first born for no other reason than appearance. My husband and I decided with our son that we didn't see how it would be medically necessary and didn't do it. I'm glad we didn't and wish I would've chosen that with my first son as well.

Honestly I might have done it if my so had wanted it, but then I saw a video of how its done. I threw up. For something not medically necessary its pretty cruel in my opinion. People argue that its more prone to infections yada yada I've never had any issues though or heard of anyone with issues. So basically it comes down to social stuff. Aesthetic, wanting baby to look like dad, look like other boys, I've never cared as much about that, and after watching that video nothing is worth doing that. They may not remember it, but have cortisol levels raised that high at that age can cause life long issues. You have to do your own research.

Watch videos of circumcisions being done...that may help with your decision. Before kids my husband wanted it done...most men want their sons to look like them. I get it...but then you have this perfect little human (as yes they are perfect just the way they are) and you can’t imagine cutting their genitalia. According to my child’s pediatrician it is becoming a less and less common procedure.

My son is 7. He loves his life with an infected penis because he is uncircumcised. We wash him and dry him well, we’ve tried creams ointments, antibiotics, everything. So with my youngest, we had it done. Our seven year old is miserable and no matter how many times we’ve gone to the doctor to check for internal infection and everything else, they can’t come up with anything. I won’t put another child through that. My 7 year old has now asked to be circumcised, and we told him we would let him talk to the pediatrician about it with us and we would decide what to do. It’s harder as they get older, but he’s miserable. Hell accidentally roll over on his stomach in his sleep and wake up bawling his eyes out because it hurts him so bad. We tried switching soaps, too. Nothing helps.

My sons father is circumcised and for that reason he DIDNT want our son to have it done. He said he was made perfect and whole and will explain that to him when he is older. it can reduce sensitivity, it can get infected, they could botch it... just all risks I’m not willing to take and neither is his dad. he’s perfect the way he is! No reason to mutilate a child.
