Commitment and honesty mean more to me than marriage and a ring. As long as I have the first two, I don’t need the latter.

My aunt just got out of a 20 year relationship. They never married, and neither of them really wanted to. They bought a house together, cars together, built an entire life together. My grandpa died a few months ago, and it made my aunt realize how much she missed not having the opportunity to have him walk her down the aisle. Her partner had also been super distant and made her go through the death of her father alone, so she started to resent him. They eventually separated because of it, and now she’s entitled to nothing. She had to get a lawyer to try and get him to sign her car over to her (it’s in his name), and get some money off of the house that she helped pay for, even though her name is not in the loan, just the deed. He’s making it so hard for her, and she’s been through so much. Legally, there’s not much she can do. I would never build a life with someone knowing they weren’t committed to sharing half of that life built if something happened. Not to mention not being able to make health decisions for him, if he were to get hurt. Marriage isn’t just a piece of paper.

I just broke up with my bf of almost 6 years because of this😔 everything was going great and all of a sudden I start saying “ I want to spend the rest of my life with you” and he freaks out a bit and later on he says he doesn’t believe in marriage and would rather have us move in together because we are still getting to know each other! It’s been... almost 6 years! I told him i respect his opinion but it’s messed up he kept that from me and was basically holding someone else’s wife hostage. So we decided to break up. Our relationship was great but I always had a gut feeling that I wasn’t the One to him. Sucks..

Marriage wasn't that big of a deal to me. I would have liked to for legal ease reasons, but it wasn't a necessity

It depends. You don’t have to be married to someone to be with them for the rest of your life. The way I see it is you want to be together, you’ll be together. If you get sick of each other 20 years from now, at least you can leave without going through a divorce.
