Buying things before shower?

Hi ladies, first time mom here. Baby boy due in late August. My shower is in mid July. I have not purchased a single thing for his nursery yet. My girlfriends keep telling me not to purchase anything for him until after my shower. 
It seems unrealistic to me to think that a shower of under 30 people are going to furnish my entire nursery and I’m starting to want to nest.
 Is it safe to buy some essentials like the crib and glider at this point? Any feedback is appreciated!

Even though we were buying the furniture (and other big ticket items) ourselves, we waited until after the shower. Most registries offer a completion discount of 15 to 20%.

We bought all of the furniture ourselves before the shower, and a couple of other things that were on sale (a lillebaby carrier, storage stuff, crib mattress). I will say that most people bought smaller things from the registry (less than $100) and we ended up using the amazon registry completion discount to get the rest of the (less cute, more expensive) stuff after the shower.

You should probably just buy the nursery furniture yourself instead. 
With my first I was given everything I really needed, like smaller, useful stuff. (diapers, wipes, clothes, swing, playpen, walker, sit me up seat)
I didn’t want a crib or changing table or glider. I only used the play pen and same with #2.

We bought our furniture EARLY. Before we even announced to everyone because we found good deals and I honestly didn't think I'd have many people buying big ticket items. If you can buy it, do it!

I’m not registering for nursery furniture so I will be setting up nursery long before my shower (prob will start looking around 20ish weeks). I wouldn’t get too close to your due date to get the big items set up.

Everyone criticized me cause I decided to buy majority of stuff I want and need. I was not waiting on baby shower and playing a game of who may or may not bring a gift. I do not regret anything at all. I’m sitting and waiting for my princess to arrive now.
