Requesting not to get a sonogram?

So my doctors office does a sonogram every single apt.  It’s awesome that I get to see the baby every time I go, until I get that bill.  I have a new insurance with a crazy deductible, so I am paying almost $200 for each sono. I already had 2 sonograms and I am only 14 weeks and looking at a $600 bill.  I know some offices don’t do sonograms every visit, so would it be weird if I requested not to have it when I go??

You aren’t forced to get them. I would just tell them you need/want the major ones that are normal. I believe it’s around 20 weeks, and 34 or so?

I’ve never heard of an office doing one at every visit. You can absolutely decline it.

You can decline any type of medical treatment it is your right. Usually women get a dating scan, an optional nt scan, and an anatomy scan unless there's other medical reasons such as being high risk.

I work for an OBGYN and at most we do three the whole pregnancy, 1 the confirmation ultrasound 2 the anatomy scan and 3 last few week growth scan.... why do they do them so often!! I would explain your situation to them and they can’t make you do one, especially if they aren’t going to code the ultrasound medically necessary to do so your insurance doesn’t screw you. IF my office does more then 3 we usually have a reason to do the extra one and code it accordingly so the patients insurance understands that it was needed....

Not weird at all. The FDA is against extra sonograms unless there is a medical need for to the very small risks associated with excess scanning so your doctor shouldn’t really be doing it anyway but clearly is for the $. You only really need the NT one at around 12 weeks and the anomaly scan at around 20 weeks. If I were in your shoes I’d decline all but those unless there were medical reasons to have another scan :) x

No it’s not weird that’s really expensive. I would get it maybe every other appointment . But it’s really up to you
