Self Defense Items in School

Should students be able to have items in their bags for self defense? I’m not talking about guns and knives btw but stuff like pepper spray and bear spray.

I was in summer school where I’d have to bike home, usually I’d carry bear spray with me when I leave the house (I live in Alaska) but I couldn’t bring it with me when I went to summer school. While I was biking home I saw what looked like bear scat which would indicate bear activity, I got very nervous because I didn’t have my bear spray which is my self defense against a bear attack.

But this runs deeper than that, violent crimes aren’t horribly uncommon anymore. Should students be allowed to arm themselves with a defensive mechanism? Of course with the expectation that teachers would monitor it’s not being used in a harmful manner.

If so should it be available only to students who walk/bike home? Or should all students be able to access?
