Breast pump??

Question

Do stay at home moms need to pump? Or is just letting baby breastfeed without pumping okay? FTM here and have no idea 😩
And how do you know when to pump?? How often?

I stayed at home for a year but I started pumping once a day when my firstborn was four weeks old. He’d started sleeping longer stretches at night so I’d just pump for 15-20 mins before bed. It built up enough of a freezer stash that I was pretty much able to leave whenever I wanted/needed to for appointments or dinner with some friends or whatever. It was a huge sanity saver for me. 
You don’t HAVE to pump though. My SIL gave formula if she had to be away from her son. My friend’s baby refused to take a bottle so she just didn’t leave him for long stretches until he was one. It’s really about what works best for you and your baby.

Don’t pump the first 2 months or you will confuse your milk supply. I’m going to be at home for the first year so I got a manual pump cos I’ve heard you won’t use it often but would be good to build up a supply when you wanna go out.

I think I used my pump once with my daughter and I breastfed for over a year... it’s not a necessity

It’s definitely a good idea to have a pump! You may want a break for your nipples or eventually want to slip out for a few hours.

You can pump too . You can put it in the fridge or freezer to save for extra or take with you if your going to be out for the day. You can just pump between feedings it helps keep your milk supply up too.

I’ve been off for 3 weeks and have already used pumped milk for when my family is visiting or if I want to sleep in and let my husband feed the baby. It’s really convenient to have around.

Yes you should have a pump because your breast will make more milk than you need in the beginning until your body knows how much to make.

Definitely want to have a pump unless you plan to give the baby formula in it’s bottles. There will be plenty of times when you deserve and need a break from the house/baby/nursing.
