Difficult question: Can an abortion cause permanent damage?

I had an abortion in my early twenties, as it just wasn't feasible at the time, no job, no stable relationship, etc.

I'm now 38 and wish to get pregnant again, but I have been trying for a few years unsuccessfully.

Is it possible that there was damage done during the abortion itself that has been making my chances of succeeding harder? I was 34 when I started trying again, so could age have already been against me?

I've been scared about asking my GP about this, as I don't want to be judged for trying at my age, or hear any bad news. I'm tempted to just go to a gynecologist without going to my GP first, but am also worried about possible backlash.

I would love for this to finally be my chance, but fear that I made a bad decision in the past and it might be too late now for me.
