Diva cup HELP

I just tried using the diva cup for the first time and it was a horrible experience!!!!! It HURT really badly putting it in and once it was in I COULD NOT turn it. The more I tried to grasp the bottom not the stem (jamming my fingers in and hurting more just to reach it!!) the further up I pushed it because it was too slippery to grip the bottom without gripping the stem. I barely got it out by pulling on the stem with my fingernails because even that was so slick my fingers would slide right off. How the heck am I supposed to use this thing?? I’d really like to not have just wasted $40.
