How long did it take toddler to transition to new bed/new room?

My son is 2 years old (27 months) and I’m pregnant with baby number 2 in January. He is still in his crib and I’m so nervous to switch things up on him but we do have his new room ready. When I talk to him abt moving to his new big boy bed he gets upset and he wants his crib. I really don’t want to buy a second crib. When should I start the process? And how long did it take for your toddler to adjust?

I put my son into his own room at 9 months old. We had no problems.
We also use a mattress on the floor because I dont want him in a cot and he absolutely loves it.

We transitioned my son at 14m to a toddler bed. He waits for us just fine and if we are “taking too long” he gets up, grabs a toy and brings it back to his bed. It’s up to the kid when they are mentally ready. You can try helping him get excited and talk about big boys get big boy beds. With you pregnant he might be regressing and thinking that babies get more of the attention. Depending on how far along you are it might help to just wait.

I'm a fan of 2 cribs for that age. Then eventually take the railing off and use it as a toddler bed. It really makes life so much easier. Once they transition, they tend to resist bed time and especially nap time and when they're that young, it's hard to discipline them to stay in bed. They also tend to regress once baby arrives.

I'm actually keeping my daughter in her crib when the new baby comes for my own ease and peace of mind. I did buy a second crib and I made sure it was when that transition to a toddler bed. I'm going to switch her into her new crib before the baby is born, and use the other crib for the new baby. So I bought the crib used off Kijiji, with a used mattress and everything, and it only cost me $50. That way baby has a safe crib, two-year-old is still contained in a crib and doesn't feel like there's too many changes, and I can change it to a toddler bed to help transition are to a big kid bed. That's the plan anyway we'll see how it goes. Baby is due in November and we haven't yet put the new crib together...because we have to move some other stuff out of the new baby's room to make room for a crib in there!

Not my experience, but my sister got my oldest nephew a ‘big boy bed’ just before my youngest nephew arrived (23 months). Regular twin bed with a rail to help adjust. She also got this glow clock thing that as a sunshine face and a moon face. My nephew learned he had to stay in bed until the sunshine face showed up. It helped with the transition and he was really good about it. Good luck!
