Surprise c-section - almost 11lbs!!

Kristin

I had a surprisingly easy pregnancy. Didn’t have much morning sickness at all in the beginning and thanks to my 6’1” frame I had plenty of room for my boy to grow. My OBs told me I was measuring “normal” each visit and I had no complications. However since I was born 10lb 10oz, I was expecting him to be a big one.

Week 40 rolled around and I wasn’t having any signs of labor yet, so they wanted me to get an ultrasound to check fluids levels. Really glad they did!! The sono tech estimated my baby’s weight at 10lb 13oz. My husband and I exchanged glances and laughed, since we expected that. We went to the room to wait for my OB to fill us in, and he kind of burst through the door and asked if we had heard the weight guesstimate. We nodded yes and he said that he’d get a c-section scheduled for the next day. I asked “oh really?” And he basically laughed at me as if there were any other options lol (very nice guy, we loved him!)

Shit got real in those next 12 hours for us! It was really nice having the night to prepare and kick into gear. We finished off the nursery, did one final Target run, and had our last supper before being parents. TV off, enjoying the silence.

I was scared admittedly since a c-section is major surgery after all, and I had been prepping for vaginal delivery. I have to say though, that was the absolute best plan. I didn’t go into labor at all, and the most painful part was the first few days recovering. But I went into the OR, was numbed quickly, had my husband by my side, and 30 pain-free minutes later I had my son on my chest.

Elias Halton was born July 16th weighing 10lb 12oz and 22cm long. Not breaking any records, but damn did I make one fat healthy baby!!
