Been having contractions

I have contractions that vary between 10-15 minutes apart and they’re pretty painful. I know since they’re irregular that it can’t be labor just yet. But it can’t be Braxton Hicks either can it? Because they hurt pretty bad? I read that Braxton Hicks aren’t painful. TIA for any advice
