What do you do when your 1 1/2 year old throws a tantrum?

Currently going on 12 minutes of screaming and throwing himself on the ground over a bite of Mac and cheese.

I agree. Ignore it. Make sure they’re in a safe space so they can’t injure themselves and then totally ignore it.

My LO has what we call a "calm down spot". It's not a traditional time out but more of a positive reinforcement to teach him how to manage those tough emotions when redirection doesn't work. I will walk him over there and tell him to sit down and take a break. Once he starts to calm down I talk to him about what happened. Once he is calm he will give me a kiss and go back and play. It has actually helped him a lot because his tantrums usually stem from not being able to say words yet so us talking and him calming down first allows him to listen to me after he has gotten all of his big emotions done and over with. He has had less tantrums/shorter ones since I've started doing it this way. I do ignore his tantrums when I can tell it is just for attention though but if he is legit upset about something we do the calm down spot.

I always just ignore it cuz I have noticed if I pay it attention she thinks its good attention 😑😑 its definitely nerve wrecking tho

Ignore it. And I mean really ignore it, walk away, leave the room, or put him in a room by himself.

I put my son in his room and let him throw his tantrum. When he’s done and sat there for a couple minutes without throwing a fit I let him out and resume whatever made him upset. He’s gone right back out and thrown a second fit and back to his room he goes. Time outs generally work really well for us though.

Honestly if ignoring it doesnt work I'll pretend to cry (he stops for a second to look at me) and I'll say ok your turn all happy and excited like it's a game then ill fake cry again ok your turn all happy and so on. It usually only takes a few times and hes hysterically laughing and forgot he was throwing a tantrum
