What’s a Rh Shot during pregnancy?

The rhogam shot is a shot given to pregnant women with a negative blood type. When the father has a positive blood type it means the baby could also have positive blood. If baby's blood mixes with the mother's blood (which can happen at birth) the mother's body will begin to produce antibodies to fight against the positive antigens in the blood. This can be prevented easily with the rhogam shot. Since this blood-mixing normally doesn't happen until birth, the first baby born with positive blood will be perfectly fine without the shot. However, in any following pregnancies where the baby has positive blood the antibodies that the mother's body produced will fight the baby with positive blood and abort the baby. Thankfully modern medicine is amazing and this is all avoidable with a single shot! Your baby will be perfectly fine. 😊
