Can the ER be wrong? Update!

Question

Someone I know was told they are on the verge of a late term miscarriage based on symptoms. Not sure what those were, did not ask. Could they be wrong? They have their follow up today. I am just praying this baby sticks. They are already in their second trimester. I want them to be ok so badly, they are a great couple and my family. Pray for them please.

In my experience L&D only accepts you to be seen after 20 weeks. Did they do a cervical exam? Or an ultrasound? Or just give a blanket diagnosis and move on? An ER typically gives any pregnancy with bleeding or cramping the diagnosis of threatened miscarriage

If they are in the second trimester they should be able to go to labor and delivery and get an ultrasound to be sure. ERs aren’t equip for things like that and always saying “threaten miscarriage” if no ultrasound was done.

i don’t trust ER doctors with OB related stuff. i had a postpartum hemorrhage and an ER doctor told me i just “forgot what it was like to have a period” 🙃 i ended up needing emergency surgery and a blood transfusion due to retained placenta.

They need to go to their obgyn, not back to the ER. ER doctors are wonderful doctors but their speciality is not obstetrics, it’s critical emergency care; heart attacks, gun shot wounds, strokes, and car accidents. You might as well ask a cardiologist to look at your bunions. I hear women all the time who go to the ER and are told they have a threatened miscarriage because they have slight bleeding, which is actually very common, but that’s about as specific as most ER doctors get because this just isn’t their area of expertise.
Unless they’re 20 weeks, most L&D’s won’t accept them, at which point it would not longer be termed a miscarriage, but a still birth. Hope that clears some things up! 
In any case I wish your friends all the best, I’m sure they’re scared, but hopefully speaking with an obstetrician will ease their fears! 🙏😘
