I personally don’t have the BRCA gene, but I do have the gene in my family. My mom has it and had breast cancer twice before age 40. The only reason her cancer was caught early is because her sister was diagnosed months before and made her get a mammogram. If you have the gene, you have an 85% chance of getting breast cancer and will need a double mastectomy anyway. Personally, I’d remove them, it’s likely you’ll have the same outcome of needed them removed, but at least you won’t have cancer. If you are done having kids, I’d also recommend looking into a complete hysterectomy too.

Hey so i know this thread is from a little while ago but I thought I’d give an update from my previous comment. Would’ve done  it sooner but things have been a little hectic.
So during my consultation for the prophylactic op the surgeon did a check, everything felt fine, did a routine ultrasound and spotted something suspicious. 7 days later I’m being told that I already have a breast cancer that I was actively trying to avoid. I’m only 27 and not in the ‘higher risk’ age.
I’m now 7 weeks in of a gruelling 5 months of chemo, been put in a chemically induced menopause to protect my ovaries (it’s really not fun) and then surgery after that. Definitely not how I planned on spending my first year of marriage 😑
So my attitude has change a little now. Had I known what I do now I would’ve pushed for surgery as soon as I found out my BRCA result and could’ve avoided a whole lot of stress and heartache. If your thinking of getting it done don’t wait till you hit the at more risk stage. Or at least push for monitoring sooner.

I voted yes. I have a BRCA 2 mutation, got tested a few years ago after my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer and having a strong family history.
I wasn’t ready to make such a big decision then ( Id just turned 25). Then life got in the way, planning a wedding and then dad passing away shortly after, and then going travelling. 
I’m now 27 and have decided now is the right time for me. Got my appointment with the breast consultant next week.
For me I don’t want the constant worry. I love my boobs and they have served me well 😂 but keeping them and having an 80% life time risk of breast cancer isn’t worth it.
Also I work in plastics so I know the younger you have surgery the better they tend to look! Can’t help but be a little vain about it 😂
If you’re unsure you gotta think of all the pros and cons, and at the end of the day it what you feel is best for you.

yes my friend did this and got breast implants in her late twenties I think. She got pregnant with 2 healthy boys.

I would. I have married family that’s that gene is very prevalent in and they’ve done it if they knew before they got cancer.
