Can you get ovarian cysts if you aren’t ovulating?

okay so last wednesday i went to the ER because my doctor thought i had early appendicitis. they did tests and the doctor at the hospital said it was ovarian cysts. he told me that you get those when you ovulate. i normally have around a 34 day cycle and this was a week after my period (august 3-7) finished. my question is, can you get cysts when you aren’t ovulating, or did i just ovulate early this month? my boyfriend and i decided not to track this month so i haven’t used opk or anything. i’m super confused. i tried looking it up on google and it just seemed to confuse me further. i shouldn’t get my period until next month but today and last night i’ve been lightly cramping and i have blood when i wipe. is this implantation? did i seriously just “accidentally conceive” the first month i decided to truly not worry about it?
