The only symptom my son has is vomiting.

Clear running nose, vomit,  and a fever.  The vomit is usually she is playing and running around and it just comes out.

It's so hard to tell before they can tell you that their ears hurt. My oldest had so many her first 2 years of life. She never ran a fever with any of them. She just got really fussy and had a hard time sleeping. I took her in anytime she seemed overly fussy just to make sure. A few times it wasn't an ear infection but most of the time it was. 
Pulling at their ears can be a sign but my babies did that anytime they were sleepy. It was a comfort thing. So I could never go by that. 
Whenever in doubt just call the dr. The nurse can usually tell you over the phone whether to bring them in or not.

My son is extra clingy when he has an ear infection ( he ended up having 5 in his first year). Nothing makes him happy for an extended period of time. He would have a hard time sleeping and would wake up crying after 30 mins to an hour. Most of the time he would pull at his ear but my son only had a fever once from an ear infection (which they say that a fever also is a common symptom)

My oldest had none... I was shocked. My second refused her bottle, crying and fever. Some pull at there ears.
