Is this tax like a sales tax? Or is it like you're paying for service like a cable bill or is this just horseshit.

I like the way their ad says they know if you don't have a tv licence, it's like no shit Sherlock, you literally have a database of every address in the country (which anyone can purchase) and just put a marker against the ones who don't have a licence. Also while they may know that three houses in a particular street don't have a licence they have no powers to actually detect whether those houses do in fact watch tv.
The law changed back in around 2012 I think so they are no longer notified whenever a new tv is purchased, basically since it became more common for people to own TVs just for use with consoles and streaming services.
The only reason for the licence is to fund the BBC, they are the only channels that don't have any advertising and they are the ones who fund an awful lot of documentaries that otherwise wouldn't be made.

No, its a tax to watch tv. Then if you want more than the basic channels, like the ones that are free in America, you have to also buy cable.
