I need opinions... am I right to be upset?

My boyfriend of 5 years, his new friend that is a girl, and me all went out to dinner last night while hanging out. Well when it was time to pay my boyfriend said he didn’t have enough cash to pay the whole bill so he said I would have to be on a separate check. He made me pay for myself which is fine, but he paid for his friend that is a girl rather than me. When we were alone I asked him why he would do that and he said because his friendship just started with this girl so he wants to make a good impression. Am I right to be upset?

He's trying to make a good impression by buying her food but forcing his partner to pay for her own meal? If she thinks that's a good impression she needs her morals checked because I'd put that guy in his place! Plus why is he trying to impress her anyway? Bit weird if you ask me! How would he feel if the roles were reversed

why the fuck is he trying to impress another girl? First off, if I were that new “friend” I would have felt extremely uncomfortable. Friends don’t need to pay for friends. If I had a little extra money one week sure maybe I would buy a friend a coffee or something or if one of us were from out of town and visiting I might pay for a meal, but not to impress anyone. If he needs to impress a friend, there’s more going on.

I'll play the devils advocate here. Maybe he intended on paying for everyone, and offered to pay for her beforehand but when the bill came, it was more than he prepared for it to be. So rather than having to go back on his word to the new friend, he asked you to cover your meal to save his embarrassment. My husband and I have offered to pay for meals for our friends before so this isn't totally strange to me. I hope for the sake of y'alls relationship, that this was the case.
