Need advice on a family name 😭

My grandpa and dad share the same first name, and I’ve decided to name my son the same (I’m in a same sex relationship and pregnant with anonymous donor sperm so there’s no father to name him after or anything like that), but I’ve not told anyone what I’m naming him (just excited to have something be a surprise).

Tonight I had my parents over for dinner and they were joking about all the names they hated “for sure don’t name him Hershal or Weber or Chicago Kardashian” yadda yadda they were just joking about all of it because they’re dying to know his name. Then my dad goes on to say how much he hates his name. 😳 Hates it. Has hated it since he was a kid and that’s why he goes by a shortened version. 😭😭😭 I’ve never heard him say this before obviously! I thought he went by the nickname because my grandpa went by the full name.

I held it together until dinner was over and they left. And now I’m a mess. Absolutely heartbroken. He hates his name and that’s what I’m naming his grandson (same first different middle). It sounds so dramatic but I’m just devastated. I’ve been planning to give my son his name for as long as I can remember.

What would you do??! Would you change his name? Or assume grandpa will love him and learn to love the name on his grandson? I know this is so “first world problems,” but I’m just so sad. I don’t want to change his name!! 😩😢😭

Advice? Anyone? Ugh my heart is so so sad.
