Travel system or separate car seat?

Question

My dad works fitting car seats and has lots of training on them so I've asked him and he's said as long as the travel system is a brand that also sells separate car seats then they will be the safest.
So do I buy a car seat separate from the pram which I know will be safe and get a slightly cheaper pram? Or do I go with a more expensive travel system with a reliable car seat?

All car seats are held to the same safety standards. So either way you’ll get the “safest” option. 
So whichever is more convenient for you to buy, I’d go with that!

I say read all the reviews and decide for yourself.  I loved having an infant seat and didn’t mind buying a bigger one when he was older. I went back to work when we were having below zero temps every morning and he was only a few months old. Trekking out with a little baby at 6 am in three feet of snow made an infant seat with a cover I could pull down in the car waaaay better than trying to keep baby warm and then unwrapping them from whatever they were in to put them into a car seat already in the car. I was also hauling my teacher bag, bag for pumping, diaper bag, and baby. As for a travel system, I ended up buying my seat separate from my stroller because I wanted a specific seat and the system it came with wasn’t a good jogging one and even though I don’t jog I wanted one that was good for “off-road” at festivals and things like that.

We use the graco 4ever for birth until “done”... did it with my first and currently doing it for our newborn as well. Our reasons:
We didn’t want to use the car seat outside of the car. The shape of a car seat causes oxygen desaturation (look up the studies if you’re curious) and a poor spinal curve so we don’t use them for naps, strollers, errands, etc. Instead we do babywearing. 
Also, budgeting. You’re going to end up with purchasing a bigger car seat, anyways.  This skips one of the two purchases.

It all depends on the brand. However most travel systems do not have the best version of their car seat with it. You can find much safer car seats that are sold separately. You also really shouldnt use a travel system anyway, being in car seats outside of the car isnt good for babies.

For our family we chose a convertible car seat, it’s not as convenient as getting your baby out but I much preferred it because I didn’t like my baby sleeping/being in the car seat too long especially when they are tiny.

I found the best option for me was to buy a convertible car seat that could be used from birth. I never intended to use the car seat outside of the car so that made more sense than buying an infant car seat then later having to buy a convertible one. I just babywear in a carrier/wrap when we’re out and about! I bought a stroller as well, but so far I’ve only used it for walks around our neighborhood. I have a feeling I’ll use it more once he’s bigger since he’ll be heavier for me to carry. My son is 9 months old now and I’ve never regretted going this route! The only time it was somewhat inconvenient was when we went to eat at restaurants before he could sit in a high chair because he always had to be in our laps.
