What to wear?! Help me!

Question

My boyfriend is in the Air Force and on the 5th his unit is doing a formal dining in. He doesn’t know much about female civilian dress code. All he said is a floor length formal dress. Anyone else know the dress code I need to follow? I’m at a loss of what I need to know before buying a dress.
Update: everything went really successful and I think we looked pretty great!

Formal gown, keep it simple. Don’t drink if you cannot control your alcohol. You represent him and you will be judged based on your behavior and what you wear. You would be surprised how many people act like idiots at these formals and this is the one place and time you don’t want to topic of conversation among his coworkers and officers

simple makeup so you don’t have to worry about touching it up. 
get a floor length dress and see if they have a “dress deployment” store on base, they’re cheap or free! 
try not to drink too much, they’re big on wives not ‘embarrassing’ the husband. 
no need to stress about it, enjoy the dinner!

Its pretty much an adult prom. However you want to not show a lot skin because you reflect who he is as a person. Have fun!

Never been any make up rules for me
But I Had to dress appropriately, floor length dress, could have slit but only up to knee, no cleavage on show, no massive cut out on the back, 
Had to be somewhat reserved, so long as you can handle your drink, drink what you like 
I was lucky with my ex, they were navy and after dinner they had open bar so everyone rat faced 😂

One of my friends told me when looking for a dress for my for dining out with my husband that it should look professional formal. Meaning modest but dressy long.
it’s okay to drink but be aware they do a lot of toasts so pace yourself accordingly.
Most of all they are pretty fun. It’s a good opportunity to meet other wives/gf/so’s of other soldiers in your “military family.” 
It’s a good way to build support networks for you when you are home and they’re deployed.
I can’t tell you how many times an army spouse I met at a dinning out as become a good friend.
