Do cervical checks and membrane stripping cause infection?

I'm trying to think doctors wouldn't perform this if it was risky but my anxiety is going crazy over infection. Sweep done and induction in 9 days!

There isn't a risk of infection until the amniotic sac has been ruptured. 
That said, cervical checks are unnecessary and a membrane sweep might do nothing. If it does something the intent is to jump start your labor. The issue is that it is before your body is naturally ready and could lead to interventions being needed.
I speak as a doula, but also from personal experience. Before I was trained and had more knowledge on it, I agreed to two membrane sweeps for my third. The second caused my labor to jump start to very intense contractions before baby was ready to come out. It made my overall labor 3xs longer than my labors were with my 1st and 2nd. The pain was greater than anything I had experienced and I was exhausted and ended up with complications.

I had it done with my first and everything is very sterile but it did send me into labor lol

It could but anything can really cause an infection so I don’t see any harm in it
