I ate a ham sandwich today without heating it first. It’s the first time eating deli meat since I found out I was pregnant. I felt bad because my grandma made me a sandwich and I didn’t want to be rude. Am I going to miscarry now??

No that’s not how it works. There’s a small chance of listeria in deli meat, which can cause miscarriage if you get sick. The chances of getting sick are small. Just heat up from now on :-)￼

This happened with my first. We hadn't told anyone yet and we were visiting my SIL and she had prepared turkey sandwiches for us and I ate it. My understanding is there hasn't been a listeria outbreak in deli meat in a long time. Try not to worry about it too much.

You will definitely be fine. There is a tone of stuff you will be told not to eat because of an off chance that you run into contaminated versions of it. Supposedly you aren’t suppose to eat soft serve ice cream either because they don’t always clean the nozels off well enough. Odds are you could eat all those things (raw juice too etc) your entire pregnancy, and nothing would happen. It’s just a “better safe than sorry” rule that ends up panicing us poor mothers when we forgt.

Listeria is the bacteria they are concerned about in deli meats. It is the same pink bacteria that grows in your toilet and showers if they aren’t cleaned well enough. Consider how long it take for the bacteria to grow to noticeable levels on your tile. If it’s a fresh pack of turkey that had been kept refrigerated, the odds of listeria being in high enough levels to make you ill is unlikely. Not saying you can’t get it, but it’s not the end of the world. You won’t automatically miscarry from eating a turkey sandwich but try to follow safe food storage and preparation and you’ll be fine.
