Has anyone changed their last name and their kids because they want to? Other then marriage

So I’m not married never been but hate my maiden name dont have a relationship with my dad anyways lol. And always didn’t like my last name, have several kids as a single mom and thought I’d change it as you can pick your own name and change my and my kids last name to it start our own family name! Anyone know anyone done this?

I think it’s a fantastic idea! You’re already working to create something new and positive with your little family. Why not have a new and positive name to reflect that?
The only hesitation I’d have is if the kids are old enough to have an attachment to the old last name... in that case I’d want their buy-in before changing their last name.

I want to change my last name to my moms maiden name, my dad is honestly just a bad person and I don’t want to be associated with him any more than I have to, but I know it can be such a pain and you have to change all your documents and everything so I’m hesitant

The country where my husband is from, this is much more common, even men have been known to change their last names.

Sometimes people do this when they immigrate. But usually it's just spelling change. One friend looked at his history and when previous generations came to Canada they dropped the Van from their last name. Cousins of my husbands family dropped two letters in the spelling of their European last name to make the pronunciation more "English"

Firstly it's not your maiden name unless you are married. If you are not married then your last name is just your last name. It can't be given the official title of maiden until you are married. Men also don't have maiden names. Your Dad's last name is just his last name. 
Secondly, you can do what you want. Change it, don't change. Nobody actually cares what other peoples last names are. However if one day one of your children is big into family history (Ancestry) then your screwing with hundreds of years of history that led to them or their kids or their kids, kids just because one person in the whole line didn't like the name.

My husband and I talked about it before getting married, but it can be a process. Normally they have to post it (news paper/online) for so long in case anyone with the name you want it changed to to object
