Yes.  I had a uterine infection that came about because a tiny piece of my placenta was left behind after my second pregnancy.  It was horrible 😫

Yes! Absolutely can happen.  Some of the placenta can get left behind. And that can fester inside your uterus.  Or you can hemorrhage
