NHS vs Private

My husband and I have been trying for just over a year now and think it's time to get some tests done and see if there's any medical reason we aren't conceiving. We are debating whether to just go to the gp or to go to a private clinic. For those who have gone through the NHS, how was it? Was it a long wait for all the tests to be done? I would really appricate some info about your experiences.
