FTM and not sure about contractions

I’m 38+4 and I’m not sure what to expect with contractions. I’ve been having bad cramping like menstrual cramps in the lower part of my stomach but im not sure if that’s a contraction. I’ve had BH on and off this whole pregnancy. Thursday my doctor did a check and I was dilated to 3cm and 80% effaced. I’ve lost my mucus plug over the past week and had the bloody show Friday.
