Screaming hysterically throughout the night??

So up until now we've been pretty blessed with a happy baby who sleeps through the night, only waking once between 5-8am for a bottle then back down. Last night... was. A. Nightmare!!! My 6 month old woke up every 1.5-2 hours just screaming and crying inconsolably. NOTHING would settle him down - not even holding him (that just seems to make it worse). We'd have to just pin him in our arms and let him scream for a good 5-10 mins before we could even get a binky in his mouth which he'd then fall right back to sleep once he'd take the binky - but refused to take it before wearing himself out from screaming. So I'd no sooner get him back to bed and finally fall asleep myself, and he'd be up again starting all over. We have never had a night this bad and I have no idea as to the cause. He's may have a tiny cold that bugs him in the middle of the night, but fine during the day. He had a far worse cold than this before and didn't have this issue. He already has 3 teeth with a 4th one just about to pop through the gums, so I'm having a hard time believing its teething pain as his previous 3 never gave him this much grief. Who knows though- maybe this time is different? I'm at a loss... anyone else ever gone through this with their 6 month old, or having any similar issues currently?? He's fine during the day, just does not want to lay down now. No fever... HELP ME!!! it feels horrible when you dont know what's wrong and you can't fix it!
