Twin Delivery with breach extraction! Long read
Finally get a chance to sit down and write out my birth story.
I had a twin vaginal delivery with a breach extraction of baby b! It’s possible! Don’t let people scare you out of it. There is still risks involved with it but we were lucky and it was an option for me. Baby girl was the leading baby and baby boy was breach
So here’s my story
Due to Gestational Diabetes I was to be induced at 37 weeks. So 10/27 at 37 and 1 We went at 6:30 in the morning to be induced. Got both babies on the monitors. I had been 3 cm dilatied since 33 weeks so we just started Pitocin. I started Pitocin at 9:00, started having regular contractions every 2-3 minutes apart but they weren’t super painful. My doctor encouraged me to get an epidural since we were attempting a breach extraction of baby b. So after a couple hours of laboring naturally they came in and gave me my epidural which I guess my husband said I didn’t even flinch when they put it in. It hurt but nothing horrible. About an hour later they checked me and I was at a 6, they went ahead and broke my water which was the weirdest feeling ever. My family came back in the room and we just laughed and played heads up. All while having contractions that I really only felt on my left side. Around 5:30 my left side was really starting to hurt so they put a peanut ball between my legs and laid me on my left side to get the epidural to drip to that side.
My doctor wasn’t on call that day but had the doctor on call keep her informed so she could come in when the time came(she felt comfortable doing the breach extraction) about 45 minutes later, she got there she started talking to the night shift nurses about the plan. The Ob on call checked my cervix and I was a 9 1/2, she said she felt twin A’s head and messed around for a minute and said I was complete.
At my hospital all twin births happen in the OR
We started getting prepped right away. My husband got in his scrubs and we walked down there. We chatted with my Ob and some nurses. They expected it take at least an hour to get twin a out since I was a first time mom. There were so many people in the OR. I just focused on my husband and thought about getting my babies out. They had me start practice pushing around 6:50
My OB was very surprised how quickly everything was happening and called every team member on our case in. I started pushing and 23 minutes later my baby girl was born. My doctor milked here cord since we had to see what her brother was going to do quickly. They started cleaning her up and started doing an ultrasound to see where her brother was at. My Ob was able to get ahold of both of his legs and three minutes later with a couple big pushes baby boy was born. He was immediately placed on my stomach and we got to do skin to skin and delayed cord clamping.
They placed both babies on my chest, while my doctor stitched up a small tear.
We went back to our room and worked on breast feeding. Due to my gestational diabetes they had to check babies blood sugars every hour. Baby girl had hers under control but baby boy almost had to go to the NICU to get his under control. Luckily we avoided that.
Went got to go home a day and half later. We went back for our two day check up and baby girls jaundice levels were too high so she was admitted for phototherapy. It worked so quickly.
We got to go home the next morning.
They are pretty easy going babies. Learning to get on a schedule and loving every minute of it
