Christmas for ldr ?

Boyfriend and I are ldr and have been together about 8 months. I know he likes watches and I was going to have one engraved but also thought about making him a fleece blanket (the no sew kind). I found some patterns ..plaid and teal his favorite .. that would work for the fleece. Cost wise it will probably end up being about the same because he is a tall guy with a queen sized bed if I make the blanket.

We've never given each other gifts so I'm nervous about it but want it to be special. Hes been complaining of being cold lately after work so I thought a blanket would be a good sentimental option.

Thoughts? Also does anyone know how many yards I would need for a blanket that large?
