Sleep habits

I have such an even temperament baby. He rarely cries or fusses. But last night was the worst night since we’ve had him. He’s 4 weeks and 4 days. I haven’t been able to get him to sleep in his bassinet at the bedside. I can get him to fall asleep for like 30 min, and then he starts to grunt and kick his legs and he doesn’t stop, then he will start to cry after a few min. So I’ve been picking him up, and holding him and sleeping (bad I know). Finally I said I can’t keep doing this it’s not safe and putting my baby in danger, as much as he loves it (and me too) so after a mom on here recommending Taking Cara Babies newborn class, I bit the bullet and bought the class. It has a lot of good strategies and tips for successful sleeping, so I thought. Yesterday was the first day of implementing what I had learned, and it went great. 2 naps where the baby sleeps (I did 1 in bassinet, 1 in crib) both were only about 40 min but according to the class, that’s a win. And offered to eat every 2 1/2-3 hours. (I breastfeed) that went well all day. So I thought tonight will be great. At 8pm I got the baby into his jammies and swaddled. I started with what she recommends to “relax the baby” I noticed he started to get drowsy so I put him in the bassinet Awake, as recommended. From there it was 3 hours of back and forth screaming and trying to get him drowsy again. Finally after 3 hours of mostly screaming from trying to calm him in his bassinet and me taking him out to soothe him I took his onesie off and we did skin to skin. Instantly he calmed down. I said this isn’t working. So I took him out of the bedroom and into his room where his crib is. I rocked him in his rocking chair, changed him and re swaddled him. I laid him in his crib drowsy and BAM! Fast asleep. So I fell asleep in the recliner next to his crib, And he’s still asleep! It’s been almost 5 hours. I woke up in a panic because he has never slept this long. I’m even freaking out a little cause I want to wake him up feed him and change his diaper, but I’m going to let him sleep a little bit longer. My advice here is, if something isn’t working with sleep for you mommas, try something else ! If the bassinet isn’t working, try the crib, or pack and play, or anything else you have. Be flexible. I’m so happy I tried the crib. He needed that solid sleep and so did this momma! Hopefully it continues 💙
