How do we afford this??

Question

How does everyone afford IVF? Our insurance covers anything like ultrasounds and medication but that’s it. I doubt IVF meds fall in line with our insurance. We can come up with about 16,000 we think by may but like... how do people actually afford to go through more then one round? Do you just make a lot of money? This 16k I’m talking about will wipe us of all of our savings. I’m overweight and have low AMH so I don’t qualify for grants it looks like. Am I missing something?

We're nearly $40k in at this point. My husband and I spent our savings on our first 2 cycles and after a devastating loss our parents were incredibly generous to help us out with our third cycle. This would be the first grandchild on both sides, so everyone's invested at this point. If we weren't so fortunate, we'd seek a personal loan. It might still come to that if we don't conceive this time. It's really F'ed up that infertility isn't covered at all (at least in my state) when it's really a medical issue.

We are over $30k right now but we saved, used my bonus and have lived within our means. No credit cards, loans or grants. I’ll be 10 weeks tomorrow so In the end it was worth it. Good luck!

My husband and I both make a very good living with our careers so we are fortunate enough to pay out with our savings. We waited until we were close to 30 and set in our careers before deciding to have a baby though. I often wonder if we decided earlier then we wouldn't have needed IVF in order to conceive.

In the U.K., if you or your partner haven’t had kids from previous relationships, don’t smoke (which I was surprised about, not that I smoke), have good egg count and regular period, then your first round is free. And the first round really depends on how many eggs they collect. If they freeze some and say the first go doesn’t work, they’ll keep trying till everything they freeze is used up, and that classes as first round. My husband and I just started this journey. Unfortunately I have one more op to go for something else and we can’t start properly till that op is over. But we have had our initial consultation.

For us, my husband and I plan on refinancing my truck. And we’ll pay for the test out of pocket. Our total will be around 12K. We are very financially comfortable but we don’t want to completely wipe out our bank account.

Some states mandate insurance coverage for infertility treatments, including IVF. My husband and I did two egg retrievals and three embryo transfers. With insurance, all we had to pay for was office visit copays and medication copays. We feel very, very lucky. We’re in Massachusetts—which, from what I understand, has particularly good regulations for coverage. Otherwise, we would have gone into debt to fund IVF, probably would have done only the first cycle, and I would have foregone graduate school.

How do we afford this??
