Did you get an epidural headache

Question

I don’t care about the needle but I’m scared about possible epidural side effects.  Those of you who have had it, did you get a headache?  If so, how long did it last?

I had no complications or side effects from the epidural.  The epidural was the best thing ever and I’m so glad I did it.

Me! I had a post dural puncture migraine for my first baby 12 years ago! I was super high on a shot of demerol they gave me (which they don't even give anymore) and I was shaking and couldn't really sit still so the anesthesiologist punctured my dura mater causing the severe migraine. It lasted 2 weeks I wanted to die tbh.  They do blood patches now to help but I wasn't offered one. I gave birth to baby #2  3 weeks ago and told the anesthesiologist I had that happen and she was lovely and I was completely unmedicated and was able to remain completely still with the help of my nurse. I had 0 complications and THE best epidural experience. Its not a common occurrence so I wasn't worried about it happening again. I asked for mine at 3cm as I had been on cervidil for 55 hours and had been in pain that whole time. Ask as much questions as you need to and try not to think about it as it really isn't common as long as you remain still and have an experienced anesthesiologist.

Im 39 weeks with my third baby and I'm not getting the epidural. I got it with my first baby, and I had weird sensations in my spine for months after, and back pain. With my second baby I powered through and the recovery after was a piece of cake.

My best friend is an anesthesiologist and says if you experience a post-epidural headache it’s because the epidural wasnt done completely correctly and punctured something it shouldn’t have. However it can easily be fixed, if the anesthesiologist is notified. So if you do get a bad headache, let your nurses know immediately. It’s a common issue but easily remedied with intervention.

Not epidural for birth, but I got a spinal headache after a spinal tap and it was probably the worst pain I've ever experienced (I haven't pushed this baby out yet, though! Haha). I ended up getting a blood patch because I couldn't function, I had to just lay flat on the couch or my bed. Basically my spinal fluid was leaking out into my body and not supporting my brain. It was terrible and even though I know it's rare, it's one of the reasons I am choosing homebirth and unmedicated.

You’re pushing out a baby. The least of your worries should be a headache lol. I had an epidural. No headache. Just sore spot where they put it in. Well worth it! Doing another in 9 days!!
