Should I wake my 4 day old after a 5min feed?

Question

Should I wake up my 4 day old to keep feeding after she’s fed for a few minutes? I know they say stimulate them  if they fall asleep on the boob. It’s soooo hard to wake her up. Last night she had a rough night with what I think was colic. I’m afraid of over feeding her?

How are we doing? Ps. Breastfeeding is so hard!!!!

I would stop writing that list. Completely OTT and unnecessary. Feed your baby on demand as and chill out and enjoy being a mum. You’re overthinking.

I wouldn’t wake a baby to continue a feeding, but at 4 days old I would wake a baby if it’s been more than 3 hours since she last nursed. Nursing can be exhausting for little babies so if they fall asleep, I let them get a good amount of rest in before waking them to nurse again. As they get older their stamina improves and then you get to enjoy an evening of cluster feeding!

Strip get down naked and just cover her with a blanket of she starts to fall asleep pull the blanket back, the heat change will wake her up. Or a cool wash cloth on the back of her neck. I work in a doctor's office and they recommend it until they're two months. Usually by then they can stay awake long enough to feed a good amount

I think the answer depends on whether her doctor is happy with her weight gain or not. If she’s gaining well, then maybe she gets everything she needs at night feeds in that five minutes. If the doctor thinks she ought to be gaining a bit faster, or if she’s having bilirubin trouble, then I’d guess it’s worth bothering her awake to eat more.

Baby should be feeding for 20mins+ each feed at newborn stage. (Advice from my midwife) if they fall asleep before then you need to wake them up. Either undress them or tickle there feet. Newborn aren’t great at staying awake as feeding is hard work for them, they don’t drain your boob so fast as a older baby so they need to feed longer. My daughter was feeding for 20-30mins every 30-1hr at the newborn stage. 😊

I think it’s more necessary for her since she is so new and needs to gain weight. I have a 3 month old and if she falls asleep while feeding I usually just let her. And yes breastfeeding is super hard! I winded up quitting because I was so emotionally and physically exhausted. It was adding more stress and depression that I already had to deal with. But keep it up! You’re doing great! ❤️
