How do you know if baby is NOT ready to sleep train?

My baby just turned 5 months and I want to make sure he is ready to sleep train. What are signs they are ready/ not ready? I've read some people have started and had to stop because their baby wasn't ready. How did they know their baby wasn't ready?

I tried at 4 months and he wasn’t ready. I gave it 3 days , and by the 3rd day there was no sign that he was self soothing. We were still having to do so many check ins(Ferber) and the crying was increasing, not decreasing. 
I tried again at 4.5 months and had the same rule, 3 days. And by the second night he barely cried. We didn’t even make it to the 1st check in.

Does your baby show a sleep/ wake period, sleeping longer stretches during night time compared to a nap? Can they self soothe? Are they starting to eat less at night? 
These were signs for us, we still change and feed once a night, do not drop feedings unless your pediatrician says so, we never dropped a feeding whole sleep training but now our son only wakes once a night for a diaper change and to eat.
