Can I keep my cat w/ a newborn?

Question

We LOVE our cat. She has been the most spoiled and loved cat. 
We also just found out we are expecting a baby. 
Our cat always sleeps with us.
As for the first 6 months or so of having a baby, the baby will be in the room with us. It worries me to think about my cat being in the same room as I don’t think it would be safe for the baby since my cat may want to snuggle with the baby. If we leave the cat outside of the room she will cry and scratch the door all night and will probably feel abandoned.
Later down the road I’m thinking about my baby possibly getting into the litter box. 
We don’t want to have to get rid of our cat, but aren’t sure if it will be safe to have both.

Just because you have a baby doesn't mean you just ditch your cat to the curb. I had two cats when my kids were born. Both cats loved to snuggle and my kids shared our room til 5 months old. Penny loves our children and will snuggle with them but that's because she was taught that they are part of our "pack" and not to fear the kids. We never yelled at her for sniffing the kids or even snuggling with them. My kids and Penny are inseparable... Our other cat passed away but he was just the same...

I have 2 cats whom I’ve adopted when they were kittens in 2014. They are my first babies because I am having a hard time having my own.
They have a whole closet designated for their litter with a cat door so I’m not worried about anyone or anything getting into the litter. 😊
My issue is my MIL... we just visited her last week and we were talking about my husbands birth because it was a day before his birthday and I wanted to know how her birth experience was. Well after her story she told me “you know you will have to get rid of those cats. I’m sorry honey but yeah they have to go. You can’t touch the litter at all while pregnant and at some poi t they just have to go. You don’t want any birth defects. Just NO!” 
I was so offended but laughed it off because I wanted to show respect and not get “emotional” as they always say that I am. And also not get angry and say something hurtful back to her out of respect for my husband. 
When I scoop their litter I ALWAYS use latex gloves with double trash bags and I even scoop it outside (I turned my coat closet into the litter room which is right by the front door). And afterwards I ALWAYS wash my hand because I can still feel the dirt on me even with gloves (it’s all in my head I know). But I’m very cautious. 
I know she cares but one thing about me that will quickly turn be against you is if you force me to do something I don’t want to do just so YOU are comfortable. I won’t tolerate that. 
So im happy to see that none of you ladies have given up your cats. Because I WILL NOT be giving up my cats just to please her wishes. I’m not pregnant but when we are I will also have a doctor explain these things to her as well so I’m not just being “emotional” for not giving them away. 
Oh and I also have a dog. An American Bully Pit actually and she said NOTHING about giving my dog up and my dog eats shit and is way more messy and dirty than the cats. My cats are super clean because I am super clean. But I feel like since it’s MY cats she wants to get rid of them.

I have a cat and he isn't going anywhere.  It can be challenging but there are ways to make it work. Also cats are pretty smart and trainable.

If anything start getting your cat use to sleeping outside of the room. Even though the cat should be okay with baby in same room at night unless that worries you too much. You can also put little box in bathroom or laundry room with a gate in doorway so baby can't get to it.

It shouldn’t be a problem. We have two cats that we introduced two tiny humans to. The cats were actually really good about giving them their space. We haven’t had any issues. 
Some pregnancy/baby books have info on the best ways to get pets ready for baby.

We have a dog and a cat. My kid is OBSESSED with the cat. Don’t get rid of the cat because you’re worried about him/her getting into the litter. Just watch your kid and you’ll be fine. These kids have plenty of things to get into that they shouldn’t lol
