Is this normal? Frequent microfeeds and fussiness

Al

Not sure if this is normal, but my baby (coming up on 6 weeks old) feeds constantly! She nurse's more than a dozen times a day, sometimes for up to 30 minutes, other times for "microfeeds" of just a few minutes. Typically, I'll feed her a few times back to back.

This has been a constant pattern since birth.

I went to a lactation specialist and baby was (of course) at peak performance with a textbook latch & no issues that day. I can feel my milk let down and the tugging when she nurses but sometimes (especially during the 'witching hours' she fusses, flails at my breast, pulls off, or tries to unlatch and nurse off the nipple). She always starts off with a productive feed, then sometimes tapers off to comfort sucking.

She typically has at least least 6 soiled diapers in a day (poo and pee in all) and *appears* to be gaining or maintaining weight. She does get very gassy and doesn't spit up (sometimes doesn't burp for me).

Any ideas if this is normal or will regulate at some point?

My nipples are sore & sting from her tugging on me (plus my areolas changed color--one very pale).

Please help!
